01/24/2011 - Torrance, CA
The Honda Red Riders took on round
three of the 2011 AMA Supercross series, an FIM World Championship at
Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, CA on Saturday, January 22. The weekend's
racing marked the first-ever Supercross event held at the renowned
Dodger Stadium and American Honda Racing's Trey Canard brought the
battle to the Supercross competition aboard his Honda CRF450R. Troy Lee
Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda's Cole Seely recorded his career-best result
aboard his Honda CRF250R by winning the first-ever Supercross Lites West
Championship race at this prominent venue.
With teammate Josh
Grant out with an injury, Canard was American Honda Racing's sole
representative in the Supercross competition. After crashing hard in his
heat race, Canard transferred to the main event by way of the Last
Chance Qualifier (LCQ) race. Getting a mid-pack start in the main and
rounding the opening lap in seventh position, Canard quickly set about
working his way through the pack and moved into the number three spot by
lap four. He fought his way into second position by the midway point in
the race only to relinquish two places before the race's end and he
finished a solid fourth overall.
"Boy was it a tough night of
racing for me," Canard said after the race. "I really hit the ground
hard in my heat race and by the midway point in the main I was starting
to feel the effects of that crash. I had some good battles for second
and third but in the end fourth place was the best I could do tonight.
It was amazing to watch the whole American Honda Racing team come
together to repair my bike in time for the LCQ race. I could tell I was
watching a well-oiled machine as everyone did their part to get my bike
back together in time for the race. I'm just glad we were able to get
back out there and I'm glad I was able to ride a strong race in the main
event."
GEICO Honda's Kevin Windham put in a solid effort aboard
his Honda CRF450R to record his second sixth-place result of the
season. Chad Reed dug deep to recover from an opening-lap crash and
charged from 19th place to seventh position by the race's end aboard his
TwoTwo Motorsports Honda CRF450R.
In the Supercross Lites West
competition, Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda's Cole Seely dominated the
entire field aboard his Honda CRF250R in taking his first-ever
Supercross Lites race win. In the main, Seely cranked off a hot start
and quickly seized control of the race. Once in the lead, he never
relinquished control and went on to score his first-ever Supercross
victory. Also recording a personal-best result, GEICO Honda's Eli Tomac
finished runner-up aboard his CRF250R. The rookie racer's second-place
finish gave Honda the top two spots in the class at the inaugural Dodger
Stadium Supercross. Teammate Jimmy DeCotis finished eighth aboard his
GEICO Honda CRF250R, while Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda's Travis
Baker finished 12th.
